Since Pakistan Green Building Council (GBC) began its operations in 2013 the concept of green building was an alien concept. Pakistan Green Building Council was established to address the issues being faced by Pakistan in form of energy crises, resource depletion, water scarcity, carbon emissions and so on.  The idea of green building was proposed to architects, planners, engineers’ contractors and developers.  They consider it a tricky investment at first but when the outcomes were explained to them through case study projects they considered it as great reward.

It took Pakistan GBC almost five years to convey the message that green building is essential for country like Pakistan and we are running out of resources. A green Building saves energy, water, natural resources and creates less waste and emissions and obviously it provides a healthy place to live, work and play.

The Pakistan Green Building Council (Pakistan GBC) is a membership based organization. We are committed to a prosperous and sustainable future for our nation through cost, energy, water and natural resource efficient green buildings and communities. Pakistan GBC is nation’s foremost coalition of leaders from across the building industry working to promote buildings that are environmentally responsible, profitable, and healthy places to live and work.

We are a diverse group of builders and environmentalists, corporations and nonprofits, teachers and students, lawmakers and citizens. We have signed MOU with 9 professional associations. Pakistan Green Building Council has partnered with 11 educational institutes and conducted more than 75 trainings for young professionals and trained more than 10,000 professionals in these 5 years who share the same vision of a sustainable built environment for all within the next generation.

We have organized 3 successful international Green Building Expo & Conference in Lahore and Karachi and a crowd of almost 7000 idealists gathered in these events.

The organization’s focus areas include:

  • Building Certification
  • Lead market transformation and job creation
  • Capacity Building and Awareness Building
  • Educating owners and practitioners
  • Professional Trainings & Certification
  • Membership

Pakistan GBC continuously works to provide tools that facilitate the adoption of green building practices in Pakistan. The development of SEED (Sustainability in Energy & Environmental Development) rating system® is another important step in this direction.

“A significant amount of effort has gone into developing SEED by Pakistan GBC members, partner institutes and government agencies over 2 and half years”.

SEED, which stands for “Sustainability in Environment and Energy Development” seeks for market transformation in building and construction sector of Pakistan in order to minimize their carbon footprint. It aim is to reduce energy and water consumption.

According to a recent study by World Green Building Council as building and construction sector are responsible for almost 40% of global greenhouse gas emissions. And that is only today by 2060, the floor area of buildings will be double, adding more than 230 billion m2 in new building construction means adding more emissions to the atmosphere.

“This building rating system  is major milestone for PakistanGBC and illustrates its commitment to promoting green buildings which will further reduce the carbon footprint of the building unit. With application of SEED we foresee Pakistan as cleaner, greener and more sustainable country. We really appreciate the efforts and support of our members to make this happen and for being part of this sustainability drive.
